Trauma Rehabilitation

Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital is committed to providing every opportunity for optimal recovery of the traumatically injured patient. Stallworth’s teams provide extensive and comprehensive rehabilitation programs, keeping pace with a wide range of traumatic conditions including closed head, spinal cord and multi-trauma/multi-system injuries.

Each program offers a team approach to establishing an individualized plan of care based on the specific deficits experienced by the patient. An evaluation process begins upon admission to Stallworth. The team then meets weekly to re-evaluate the patient’s progress and to develop a continued plan based upon on-going needs, with a focus toward maximum recovery. Family training is an integral part of this process.

Each team is directed by a physiatrist who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The team of rehabilitation specialists may include a physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, recreational therapist, respiratory therapist, rehabilitation nurses, nutrition specialists, a board-certified pulmonologist and internal medicine specialist. The team’s most important members are the patient and the family.

It is particularly important for patients to be close to their support system of friends and family throughout recovery. That’s why Stallworth has convenient visitation hours every day from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Other times are arranged as needed.

Targeted trauma programs for comprehensive treatment

Our physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapists teach the patient and the family about important issues like mobility, daily living activities, and community re-integration. The nursing staff initiates skin care, as well as a bowel and bladder management program, if needed. All of our patients and their families undergo training through our education program to learn about their specific injuries and how to prepare for a discharge back home.
